Chapter 12: How to create engagement.

April 23, 2018

Here's a hint, it's on you, not them.

Building an audience on social media that is targeted and is eager for your next post, whether you are trying to grow a business or a personal account is one of the most important things you can do.

Nothing competes with having that following that cheers you on throughout your journey.

We as humans want to engage naturally, but a few things can stop that from happening:

1.) Your content is flat out boring.

Maybe you find what you are doing to be very interesting, but is it interesting to your followers?

2.) The set up.

What I mean here is are you investing in your posts? Using Instagram Story to "advertise" your new post is a great way to send traffic there. If you do it right you can build a little anticipation as well which is a great way to get people engaged with your content. I usually will use snap chat stories as well because you can actually use links there if you are a small to medium sized Instagram account.

3.) #Hashtags

This one cannot be understated. Do your homework on what hashtags to use in your posts. It can make such a big difference in building your community and reaching the people that you are targeting. Seriously whoever in whatever niche you are trying to reach, hashtags are the key. Lots of em.

4.) Poor Quality Photos/Posts

This one is a little obvious but sometimes you are in a rush or don't feel like taking the extra minute to crop your photo, or make sure everything is spelled correctly in your caption. It is well worth it to doctor up your pictures and captions in advance. There are plenty of great apps to help with this as well. No excuses.

5.) You don't reply to comments.

Sure they didn't really say anything other than a thumbs up emoji, and you definitely can't pronounce their name, but taking 10 seconds to @ them and write a quick thank you, or something witty is great for two reasons. One it will bring them back to your post again. Two others will see it and see that you care about each and every person who engages with your content. Being genuine is the key here.

6.) Ask questions.

This is one of the best ways to get your audience engaged. People want to tell you there opinion on things, all you have to do is ask. Which style do you guys like better? What was the last city you visited? How do you think the playoffs will turn out? It is very easy for most business' and people to ask leading questions as well to get people engaged.

Thank you for reading this post! I hope that it can help you and give you some ideas on how to get your audience engaged in your content!
